About Toby

Toby is a 5-year old Maltese. Mom Ericka says he used to be very friendly but around the time he turned 4, he started to act aggressively towards other dogs and some people. He hasn't bitten anyone but would growl or lunge at certain situations that include:

• - Big dogs

• - Running children

• - Rolling carts/bins

• - Janitors/guards

• - Motorcycles

He barks excessively at home especially when people are in the hallway. The behavior got worse when they moved to a new condo. Daycare has been a regular part of Toby's life due to work and travel

How We Helped

Toby's situation had an urgency around it because his family was going to relocate to Australia. Before leaving, we had to make the most out of the available time so he can get to a good place before he starts his new adventure. When a dog experiences a huge shift in everyday life (moving homes, daycare, etc), it can get overwhelmingly confusing and one way it shows is excessive barking which can be a way to express the anxiety he's feeling. Providing a routine and structure for him, together with clear guidance from his owner, Toby learned to be more resilient and trusting of his mom. The reactivity during walks went to zero after his mom took control of the situations that used to upset him. Toby has since moved to his new country and home in Melbourne where he continues to live his best life with his dedicated family.
