The most basic requirement is that you exercise your dog and take them for walks outdoors. Dogs really need to be walked twice a day, for a minimum of 30 minutes each time. If they are only walked once a month, for example, they will accumulate a lot of pent-up energy, leading to boredom and frustration over weeks of inactivity. When they finally do go outside, their energy levels will skyrocket, exacerbating any existing anxiety and potentially leading to excessive barking.
While we have plenty of indoor entertainment options like Netflix, phones, and books, dogs lack these distractions. Therefore, they rely on outdoor activities to stimulate them mentally and physically, preventing boredom and reducing the likelihood of developing bad habits or behaviors. Dogs that receive plenty of exercise and outdoor stimulation, both mentally and physically, tend to be calmer and better behaved.
While training can be highly effective, it must be complemented by regular outdoor activities such as jogging, playing, sniffing, and exploring various environments like parks, busy streets, and malls. Otherwise, training may not yield the desired results, leading to a waste of time and money.
